Evangelische Stiftung Alsterdorf, Hamburg: “barner 16” creative workshop

The Alsterdorf Stiftung maintains a creative workshop at Barnerstr. 16  in Hamburg that employs people with mental handicaps. Their lab for music and film production under the direction of filmmaker Eike Swoboda is therefore called “barner 16”.

Workshop members take the main roles, both as authors and actors. The main focus is not on them, but on what it is like to have a different view and be different. This makes a handicap appear quite normal. As “arte kompakt”, a TV programme, accurately put it in July 2011, such projects are not social projects, but a cultural phenomenon...

The work of the creative workshop is an exemplary experiment that is less concerned with the problems of the handicapped and more with their inherent and unusual talents. The Hörmann Group has been sponsoring individual workshop projects for years.

In 2011, a series of short films directed by filmmakers Eike Swoboda and Carl-John Hoffmann were produced by and with members of the creative workshop. They tell the story of Eddi Airways, who gets involved in the mysterious world of birds.
